From the simple, thatched hale to the nation's only royal palace, from humble plantation cottages to fabulous estates and resort hotels, Hawai`i's architecture is as diverse as its multiethnic population.



Architects from all over the world have designed Hawai`i's buildings and some of the best Hawai`i architecture was adapted from imported styles. Island architects such as C.W. Dickey, Hart Wood, Alfred Preis, Vladimir Ossipoff, George ÒPeteÓ Wimberly, Francis Oda and others sought to define a distinctive regional vernacular " architecture appropriate to Hawai`i's climate and sensitive to its environment. The residences, churches and other buildings they designed opened indoor areas to cooling tradewinds and featured central courtyards, lanai, tropical gardens, and scenic views.



More than 150 of the Islands' architecturally and historically significant structures " including civic, commercial, ecclesiastical, and residential buildings on six major islands " are showcased. Lavishly illustrated with over 250 color photographs, this book is a chronological survey of architecture in the Hawaiian Islands.
